The Master of Arts (TESOL) is a professional qualification designed for individuals seeking to teach English to speakers of other languages. The program comprises 12 subjects—9 core units and 3 electives—studied over three trimesters.
A key feature of the course is its strong integration of theory and practice. Students gain practical experience through a supervised practicum in an authentic ESL classroom. This practical component ensures that graduates are academically prepared and professionally ready to enter the TESOL field with confidence. King’s Own Institute works closely with other language teaching providers in Sydney and Newcastle to organise practicum placements for students.
The Master of Arts (TESOL) provides students with an internationally valued skill set, enabling them to communicate and exchange ideas with people of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and to learn more about other cultures and languages.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a mastery of theories of second language acquisition and contemporary approaches to language teaching relevant to TESOL
- Apply research principles and processes and engage in continuing independent learning in support of enhanced professional skills and knowledge in TESOL
- Critically review, synthesise, apply and evaluate contemporary theories of second language acquisition and apply professional skills and knowledge to curriculum development and lesson planning
- Communicate complex knowledge to a range of audiences from diverse cultures and linguistic backgrounds
- Demonstrate skills and confidence in the classroom
- Plan and execute a substantial research-based project relevant to TESOL
- Show an informed appreciation of the ethical standards and requirements for continuing professional development in TESOL settings

Recognition under the Australian Qualification Framework
All KOI courses are accredited by TEQSA (Tertiary Education and Quality Standards Agency) and consistent with the AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework). TEQSA regulates qualifications in the Australian education system. This means that KOI is recognised as providing its students with quality education for the courses on offer in line with Australia’s Higher Education Standards.

All subjects listed in the Course Overview must be completed to qualify for the award. The subjects in shaded boxes must be studied in the order they are presented as they provide pre-requisite knowledge for other subjects. The remaining subjects (core and elective) have a recommended trimester, but may be studied in other available trimester slots to suit individual student preferences, provided pre-requisites have been completed. Students may select elective subjects from the TESOL Electives list and may take one General Elective, provided the subjects are offered in their chosen trimester and all relevant prerequisites have been met.
